Major Depression Disorder is one of the fastest growing mental illnesses in recent decades and is extremely disabling to the patient. Because of this, new approaches are being proposed to help in the treatment, among them spirituality. Objective: To identify the role of spirituality and religiosity in the therapy of depressive disorders, as an instrument to facilitate healing and adherence to treatment. Methodology: This is a systematic literature review of 08 publications from 2009 to 2020, found in the PubMed and EBSCO databases with the descriptors "treatment of depression", "spirituality" and "religiosity". Discussion: It was realized that spirituality helps to improve mood in depressed patients, increases their self-esteem, making them more active during treatment, besides being a helper in stress management of health situations. Final Considerations: In short, it is up to the mental health professionals to include the evaluation of the spiritual and religious aspects of the patient as a way to increase the adherence to the treatment of the disease, and should act synergistically with the clinical management in order to provide improvements to the patient.
