The pharmaceutical service in the Basic Health Unit (BHU) of the Unified Health System (UHS) in Brazil guarantees access to quality medicines and contributes to the rational use so that the patient is the main beneficiary. The aim of this study was to describe the importance of pharmaceutical assistance (PA) in the general functioning of BHUs with a focus on pharmaceutical services. The collected data were organized from a literature review in different bibliographic sources. The results showed that the BHU is the main gateway to the health system and that it must operate according to the standards recommended by the Ministry of Health of Brazil. In addition, the participation of the pharmaceutical professional in the clinical management of the drugs is essential to develop activities aimed at the pharmaceutical care of the patient. Therefore, PA is a set of actions related to the promotion, protection and recovery of health, individual and collective, with medication as an essential input focused on access and rational use.
