Due to the environmental implications caused by dye-containing effluents, new technologies have been sought out for the degradation or immobilization of these compounds. This study assesses the performance of Nb2O5 catalysts in the photocatalytic decolorization of a methylene blue (MB) textile industry effluent. The experiments were carried out following central point compound planning and the photocatalytic tests were performed in a batch unit in the presence of artificial and solar light for 150 min. Solution discoloration as a function of time was monitored through spectrophotometric measurements, performed at the maximum absorption wavelength of the MB dye solutions. The applied experimental planning indicated that a statistically significant interaction concerning photocatalytic MB dye solution discoloration occurred under the incidence of artificial and solar light. The greatest MB dye solution discoloration was achieved at 96% under artificial light, while sunlight led to more satisfactory results, reaching almost 100% photodiscoloration.
