This text discusses the Education in Chemistry worked in High School, from the analysis and reflections of a sequence of classes taught in a school located in Triângulo Mineiro, Brazil. For data collection, we developed open-ended question scripts with five Chemistry teachers from state public schools and we also describe [and analyze] the classes taught by one of the participating teachers. We perceive that the pedagogical practice of the basic education teacher is directed to the preparation of students to succeed in selective processes, in contrast to the practices that aim at training students to Brazilian Journal of Development Braz. J. of Develop., Curitiba, v. 6, n.12, p.103181-103195 dec. 2020. ISSN 2525-8761 103182 effectively exercise their role as citizens in society. Therefore, we reiterate the thesis of scholars when they affirm that high school does not have an end in itself, but distorts the main objective of this educational segment: full citizen preparation.
