Currently, the packaging production sector presents itself as a priority, giving importance due to its distribution and commercialization. Active and renewable raw materials have been used to produce active packaging using functional additives incorporated, thus presenting the character of biodegradability. The objective was to present the different precursor raw materials used in the manufacture of biodegradable packaging obtained from plant residues, as well as to address the main properties provided by the addition of these residues. The data that make up this research were searched through scientific databases such as Google Scholar, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SciELO Scientific Electronic Library Online and CAPES Journal Portal in which the materials that addressed the aforementioned topic were selected. Biodegradable films must be effective as a barrier to water and / or gas vapors; be soluble in water or lipid; have good mechanical and rheological characteristics; not be toxic, among other properties, so they can be used as packaging. The composition, the method of manufacture, the way it is applied and conditioned and the thickness of the film are factors that must be controlled in order to obtain the requirements mentioned. Through much research, the feasibility of using natural fibers to replace synthetic fibers, which are normally used to reinforce polymer matrix composite materials, has been evaluated. This in order to reach natural and renewable sources of raw materials, to reduce the environmental impacts caused by these materials and also to reduce costs. It is concluded that the vegetable raw materials are viable in the production of biodegradable packaging, since these have physical and chemical characteristics that will be effective in protecting products, as well as their ease of obtaining, as they have a wide variety available.
