This article shows the history of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol (Brazilian football tournament) from its beginning in 1971, until 1987, when it was replaced by a league which allowed the main clubs to organize the matches autonomously. It highlights some actors selected, and their interests, involved with the transformation of the tournament (clubs, confederation, press) in a historical context crossed for political and economic events. Finally, we problematize that transformation inside of academic readings, considering that the ruptures on the tournament, to a large extent, were consecrated by the term "modernization" connoting a sense of "advancement" and "improvement" into Brazilian football.
