this reddish-brown is restricted to the forecrown whereas the occiput is black. Moreover this brown is of a different tint in both subspecies, being lighter in rufifrons. A fine series of 22 freshly collected rufifrons from Java's most western peninsula Udjung Kulon, is extremely uniform in colour and markings of the plumage. Though there is some individual variation in the extent of the dark tint on the chest and flanks, none of the skins differs individually to an extent worthy of mention. This holds good for both sexes which differ only in size. Old skins closely resemble our fresh material, but a female collected 20 years ago is a trifle more brownish, less washed with olive. Our recently obtained skins are more olive on the upper parts and they have, together with four old skins, decidedly more red-brown on the upper surface of the tail than is the case in old cinereum but it may be that these differences are partly of a post-mortem nature. On the sides of the head there is not much difference, but rufifrons is more buffy on the breast and, to a smaller degree, also on the remaining under surface. The gonads of our fresh material were poorly developed in all females and in most of the male birds but there were two males with testes of 1-2mm, and four varying in size from 2-6mm, of which there were two reaching the maximum. In his papers about the genus Malacopteron, Voous (1950, 1953) considered a specimen in the Bogor Museum (No. 18427) from East Borneo as a hybrid between cinereum and magnum because this bird has a winglength of 82mm. instead of 79 mm, which is the maximum in 21 females of cinereum measured by him. This bird is further indicated as a female but there is nothing on the label concerning the size of the gonads or any other indication of the actual sex. Without any prior knowledge of Voous' publications, I separated this bird because of its doubtful winglength (82 mm. against 77 mm. as a maximum in eight females from Sumatra
