The wide-ranging Palaearctic Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus is almost totally vegetarian. It has been recorded as taking an extensive range of food plants. These commonly include subaquatic species of freshand salt-water, salt marsh plants, riverine plants, marshland plants, terrestrial plants of peatlands and of the tundra edge, grasses and clovers from pastureland, and cereal stubbles, winter cereals, root crops and oilseed rape from farmland (Cramp & Simmons 1977, Brazil 1981, Rees et al. 1997). In addition, though more rarely, they will also take aquatic insects and their larvae, shellfish, small frogs, small fish, salmon eggs, and carrion including rodents and waterfowl (Blomgren 1974, Haapanen et al. 1977, Honda 1979, Iijima 1984, Gerasimov & Alekseev 1990, Ladygin 1991, Ma & Cai 2000). As foraging is typically from open wetland habitats including bays, estuaries, rivers and lakes, from the surroundings of wetlands or on adjacent moorland, or from agricultural land, plants so far absent from the diet are terrestrial woodland species.
