Rat poison (Ratol), containing 3% yellow phosphorus, is nowadays, commonly available which can be rapidly fatal. Elemental phosphorus exists in two forms – red and yellow. Red phosphorus is non-volatile, insoluble, and unabsorbed, and therefore, non-toxic when ingested. On the other hand, yellow phosphorus (referred to as white phosphorus) is a severe local and systemic toxin causing damage to gastrointestinal, hepatic, cardiovascular, and renal systems. White phosphorus is used as a rodenticide and in fireworks. The rodenticide is available as powder or pastes containing 2–5% of yellow phosphorus [1].
