The hyperthermia by microwave irradiation was examined using mouse leukemia L 1210 and human chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) -cells. The experimental system was divided into two groups because microwave has the ultrasonic action and the heat action. Namely, pure ultrasonic action (at 37 •Ž) and ultrasonic plus heat actions (at 43 •Ž) were investigated by the parameters of cytotoxic effect and nuclear DNA damage of the tumor cells. Furthermore, hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) was applied to this experimental system, and the sensitization effect of HpD for the microwave action was investigated. It was found that the single strand DNA due to damage by the ultrasonic plus hyperthermic effects (43 •Ž) was as 3.4-4.6 times large as that by pure ultrasonic effect (37 •Ž). The sensitization effect of HpD for micromave irradiation (especially, for pure ultrasonic effect) was as 2.5 4.3 times also demonstrated.
