This paper analyzes some possible approaches that can be adopted to design and size a residential building integrated PV + EES (Photovoltaic + Electrical Energy Storage) system in the early design phases. A set of “basic” approaches based on cumulative values, which cannot estimate a relation between system capacity and self-consumption percentage, is typically used by designers. Besides, a design process aided by the use of a future novel version of the tool ProCasaClima is presented. This is characterized by a real-time hourly energy balance between the system production and the building consumption. The benefits of the proposed design are shown on the economic and energy indexes and compared with the results of commonly used sizing methods.
