O desenvolvimento de algoritmos de sensoriamento remoto voltadas para o mapeamento de variaveis hidrologicas tem crescido na ultima decada, permitindo a estimativa confiavel da evapotranspiracao e do teor de agua no solo. Nao obstante, essas tecnologias nao tem sido utilizadas em toda a sua plenitude na gestao de recursos hidricos no Brasil. O objetivo do presente artigo e discutir os potenciais, as limitacoes e os desafios da utilizacao do sensoriamento remoto termal como informacao util na gestao de recursos hidricos. A B S T R A C T The development of remote sensing algorithms for the mapping of hydrological variables has grown in the last decade, leading to reliable estimations of evapotranspiration and soil moisture. However, these technologies have not been used to their full potential in connection with water resource management in Brazil. The aim of the present article is to discuss the potentials, limitations and challenges involved in the utilization of information derived from thermal remote sensing in the management of water resources..
