O estudo do balanco hidrico associado a classificacao climatica de uma regiao consiste de fatores essenciais para mitigar o impacto dos fenomenos ambientais sobre as culturas e auxilia no planejamento e tomada de decisao. Objetivou-se, avaliar o balanco hidrico climatologico e a classificacao climatica para seis mesorregioes do estado da Paraiba utilizando uma serie historica de 1971 a 2017.  Utilizaram-se, dados de uma serie historica de 1971 a 2017. Foram coletados dados de 223 postos pluviometricos distribuidos em seis mesorregioes do Estado da Paraiba. O metodo do balanco hidrico climatologico utilizado foi o proposto por Thornthwaite e Mather (1955) e com os resultados obtidos realizaram-se as classificacoes climaticas segundo Thornthwaite (1948) e Thornthwaite e Mather (1955). Em todos os meses da serie historica (1971 a 2017), as mesorregioes do Litoral, Brejo e Sertao, apresentam as maiores temperaturas, tendo como consequencia maior evapotranspiracao potencial. O balanco hidrico climatico para o estado da Paraiba evidenciou limitacoes dos recursos hidricos nas mesorregioes do Alto Sertao, Sertao, Cariri-Curimatau, Agreste e Brejo, com media de 7 meses de deficiencia hidrica do solo. A mesorregiao do Cariri-Curimatau nao possui excedente hidrico em nenhum dos meses estudados. As mesorregioes do Alto sertao, Agreste e Brejo foram classificadas como de clima sub-umido seco, Megatermico, com excedente hidrico pequeno (C1dA’a’), o Sertao e Cariri-Curimatau como de clima semiarido, Megatermico, excedente hidrico pequeno ou nulo (DdA’a’) e a mesorregiao do Litoral como de clima sub-umido, Megatermico, com moderada deficiencia no periodo chuvoso (C2SA’a’). A B S T R A C T The study of the water balance associated with the climatic classification of a region consists of essential factors to mitigate the impact of the environmental phenomena on the cultures and assists in the planning and decision making. The objective was to evaluate the climatological water balance and the climatic classification for six mesoregions of the state of Paraiba using a historical series from 1971 to 2017. Data from a historical series from 1971 to 2017 were used. Data were collected from 223 pluviometric stations distributed in six mesoregions of Paraiba State. The climatic water balance method used was proposed by Thornthwaite and Mather (1955) and the results obtained were the climatic classifications according to Thornthwaite (1948) and Thornthwaite and Mather (1955). In all the months of the historical series (1971 to 2017), the mesoregions of the Litoral, Brejo and Sertao, present the highest temperatures, resulting in greater potential evapotranspiration. The climatic water balance for the state of Paraiba evidenced limitations of the water resources in the mesoregions of Alto Sertao, Sertao, Cariri-Curimatau, Agreste and Brejo, with an average of 7 months of soil water deficit. The Cariri-Curimatau mesoregion has no water surplus in any of the months studied. The mesoregions of Alto Sertao, Agreste and Brejo were classified as dry sub-humid climate, Megatermico, with small water surplus (C1dA’a’), Sertao and Cariri-Curimatau as semi-arid climate, Megatermico, small or null water surplus (DdA’a’) and the littoral mesoregion as sub-humid, Megatermico, with moderate deficiency in the rainy season (C2SA’a’).
