Objective: To investigate the influence of nutritional factors on the weight of the mother of the newborn. Methods: Descriptive study conducted quantitative with 120 mothers and their newborns in the months from June to August 2011. For statistical analysis, we used the chi-square test and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences), version 17.0. Results: The predominant normality as the body mass index of 66 (55.8%), in relation to height and weight before pregnancy 6 (4.7%) weighed less than 45 kg and height less than 1.50 cm. Regarding the power 63 (52.5%) did not have a balanced nutrition. As for folic acid and ferrous sulphate, 103 (85.8%) and 101 (84.2%) used these supplements respectively. Conclusion: The study showed the importance of identifying pregnant women at nutritional risk, so they can take steps to decrease the nutritional risks, complications and perinatal outcomes gravidicas unfavorable. Descriptors: Pregnancy. Infant, Low Birth Weight. Nutritional status. RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar a influencia dos fatores nutricionais da gestante sobre o peso do recem-nascido. Metodo: Estudo descritivo com abordagem quantitativa realizado com 120 puerperas e seus recem-nascidos nos meses de junho a agosto de 2011. Para analise estatistica, foram utilizados o teste qui-quadrado de Pearson e o software SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences), versao 17.0. Resultados: Predominou a normalidade quanto ao indice de massa corporea com 66 (55,8%), em relacao ao peso e altura antes da gestacao 6 (4,7%) apresentaram peso menor que 45 kg e estatura inferior a 1,50cm. No tocante a alimentacao 63 (52,5%) nao tinha uma nutricao equilibrada. Quanto ao acido folico e sulfato ferroso, 103 (85,8%) e 101 (84,2%) usavam esses suplementos respectivamente. Conclusao: Evidenciou a importância da identificacao das gestantes em risco nutricional, para que se possam adotar medidas que diminua os riscos nutricionais, complicacoes gravidicas e resultados perinatais desfavoraveis.
