Zearalenone is a non-steroidal fungal estrogen produced by Fusarium species. Preceding researches have demonstrated that the administration of zearalenone to immature or ovariectomized mice and rats induced cellular proliferation and mitosis in the uterine muscles as a result of enhancement of the syntheses of protein, DNA and RNA and increased cellular permeability to amino acids, glucose and uridine. Since these effects are similar to those of steroidal estrogens, we investigated a mutual interaction between the mycotoxin and the estrogen receptor in vivo and in vitro.
