The need to rapidly transport refugees,displaced as a result of evolving complexhumanitarian emergencies creates challengesfor those refugee-receiving nationsthat require formaI immigrationmedical screening of these populations.Balancing the need to expediently resettlethe refugees with these legislative andregulatory medical requirements can belogistically and operationally difficult.During the 1999 Kosovo crisis, the HumanitarianEvacuation Programmefrom the Former Yugoslav Republic ofMacedonia rapidly moved large numbersof Kosovar Albanian refugees to nationswith existing formal immigrationmedical screening requirements. Thispaper describes the successful management and deliveryof immigration healthservices during this complicated internationalevent.
