This article focuses on the nature ofinterethnic conflicts in the newly independentstates of the former Soviet Union.The author discusses the prevailing patternsthat characterize such conflicts andgives a brief account of the changes thattook place in the newly independent statesover the past decade that laid the groundfor the present volatile sociopolitical climatethere. Apart from the material causesof conflict, a lot of attention is given topsychological causes such as the loss ofidentity which is being compensated by agrowing nationalism. In the opinion of theauthor, these psychological causes shouldbe given much more attention in order topredict and prevent outbreaks ofinterethnic conflicts in the area.
