An observation of the temperature improvement effects of a shelterbelt (Abies sachalinensis, 8m in height and 50m in width) on a cultivated field located in Chitose City, Hokkaido was carried out from June to October, 1994. The data used for analysis were classified according to the weather conditions and averaged. In the case of a wind direction of SSE-SSW, which is nearly normal to the shelterbelt, the wind speed on the leeward side of the shelterbelt decreased by 21% at 1H (H is the height of the shelterbelt), and the wind speed-reducing effect was found up to 20H. In the case of a SSE-SSW wind, the daytime temperature on the leeward side of the shelterbelt rose by 0.6~0.8•Ž from lH to 5H, and the warming effect was found up to 10H. On the other hand, the temperature at nighttime on the leeward side dropped by -0.1~0.2•Ž. In the daytime, the warming effect was greatest under clear weather, followed by cloudy weather. The warming effect under rainy weather was almost the same as the reference point. At nighttime, the drop in temperature was greatest during clear weather. There was only a slight drop in nighttime temperature under cloudy or rainy weather. In October, the temperature dropped due to the effect of shade from the shelterbelt at 1H.
