Los habitos constituyen la segunda naturaleza del alma, de ahi la importancia del crecimiento en la virtud para la formacion humana, para la vida, para la libertad. Ahora bien, la materia proxima de gran parte de las virtudes morales —en concreto de la templanza, la fortaleza y sus partes potenciales— son las pasiones. Las pasiones son los actos propios del apetito sensitivo, una vis in genere integrada por dos facultades, el apetito irascible y el concupiscible, a cada uno de los cuales corresponden pasiones distintas —primarias y secundarias—. Estos afectos, si no son puestos al servicio de la recta razon y de la voluntad bien ordenada, dificultan notablemente el ejercicio del bien; pero bien ordenados por la razon pueden ser una ayuda inestimable para el crecimiento moral.Habits are the second nature of the soul; hence, the importance of growing in virtue for human formation, life and freedom. Now, the proximate matter of most moral virtues —and particularly, temperance, fortitude and their potential parts— are the passions. Passions are the acts of the sensitive appetite, a vis in genere made up by two faculties, the irascible and the concupiscible appetites, which include different passions —both primary and secondary. These affections, if not subjecto to reason and will, make the practice of the good very hard; but, if well directed by reason, they may be an invaluable help in moral development.
