Literature has empowered women through self introspec tion and self-learning encouraging women writers to take on the role of change catalysts in social chan ge and asserting the individuality of women. Childre n's literature in the nineteenth century served as a useful guide in regulating the lives of adolescent girls. The ninet e nth century Victorian Era image of the ideal woman or wife was ‘th e angel in the house’. Popularly known for her Litt le Women, Louisa May Alcott is the shining star of the ninetee nth century girls’ literature when formal education was not a privilege for the women. The aim of this research pa per is to highlight the journey to self actualizati on of the female protagonist Rose Campbell in ‘Rose in Bloom’, in a patr i rchal society by mapping her growth and developmen t through adolescence on Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy. Th is paper focuses on charity as the Victorian Christi an image in American culture that enables Rose to self-empowermen t a d ultimate happiness while adhering to the socia l norms and codes of conduct.
