Mild steel is one of the most widely used metalli c mate rial s und el' t he cond it ions of various m ec hanica l or metallu rg ica l treatments, s Ll ch as co ld working, heatin g 0 1' rap id cooling from hi gh temperatu r e. On the brittl e behav ior s of this material at low temperatu r e or under r ap id load in g, there have been hi t herto enormous a nd detailed investigat ions of various kind s. The bri tt le fract ure phenomenon has been studied , usua lly by the impact bending test with Charpy notc hed bars and the res ults of tests are described around t he value of t he "tr ans ition temperature." The transition te mperat ure under the Charpy impact bend in g test is conventi onally defined as t he temperat ure at which the energy absorpt ion decreased by t h e a moun t of ha lf of the difference between two extr eme va lu es 01' the 50" ;. s h ea r fra cture appearance is obser ved. Although th is transition temper atu r e is sens itive to the t r a ns ition f r om ducti le fracture to brittle one, it does not give a ny information about the st rength of t he stee l. T hese test r esu lts cann ot be utilized direct ly fo r the designing of m achin es a nd con stru ction, an d se rve m er e ly as an indicator of the reliabi li ty of materia ls. In addition, the relationship between the transition temperature and t he mode of fracture was not clear. Under s uch c ircu mstances, the observation of t he load-t ime r e lation during t he impact bendin g test would be useful when we utilize the result of the co nventi onal test on t he practical design. In t he p resent paper the detecting method of load-time re lationship in t h e notched-ba r im pact test is described and then t he c hange of t he t r ans it ion temperatu r es and features of the fractu r e modes of a low-carbon ki lled steel under var ious co nditi ons are stud ied by using t he load-time relations hips .
