An experiment was conducted to measure the tail beat frequency of jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus of 5.88 to 15.60cm in fork length, at the different swimming speeds in a small water channel observed with VTR system. The tail beat frequency increased in proportion with the swimming speeds from 5.5 to 54.0cm/s. The equations for estimating the swimming speed were derived from the data of the tail beat frequency and the fork length. The equation V=-10.750.54L+0.77LF could be examined to fit best with the experimental results, where V (cm/s) is the swimming speed, L (cm) is the fork length and F (Hz) is the tail beat frequency. From this equation, the maximum swimming speed for the fish of 10cm fork length could be estimated to be 10 BL cm/s as the tail beat frequency of 14.1Hz. While, the tail beat frequency is required to be 5.7Hz for the cruising speed which is considered as 3 BL cm/s.
