Genetic studies of the human tongue have heretofore been comparatively few. The studies to date have been focused mainly on the genetic origin of the primordia of the tongue in embryos in the early stages and on the formation of its external form during the development process. Researchers agree in their studies that the primordia of the tongue develop on the ventral side of the first and second branchial arches in embryos of about four weeks old (crown-rump length of about 5 mm). However, no agreement has yet been reached on the nomenclature for the primorium which eventually develops into the body and root of the tongue. Studies of the differentiation process of the surface epithelium from generation of primordia of the tongue to completion of the formation of the external form, have rarely been carried out. The present study is to elucidate the generation of the primordia related to formation of the lingual body in embryos with crownrump length of 6.3 mm and longer and the differentiation process of the surface epithelial structure during growth.
