As regards the magnetostrictive behaviors of single crystals of pure iron and iron-silicon alloys, a great deal of work (1)(2) has already been done since Webster(3) reported the first systematic study of the magnetostriction of iron single crystals in 1925. As for the magnetostrictive behaviors of single crystals of iron-aluminium alloys which have body-centered cubic structures like iron-silicon alloys, however, no detailed studies of the magnetostriction curves and the dependence on the method of demagnetization have been reported, although the magnetostrictive constants of these alloys were determined recently by Hall (4) and Gengnagel(5). In order to make clear these points, measurements of the longitudinal magnetostriction and its dependence on the method of demagnetization with the rod polycrystalline specimens of iron containing 0.53 % Al and 0.018 % C, and also with the single crystal specimens which were produced from polycrystals of iron in the form of a cylindrical rod by the strain-anneal method(6).
