Recently increasing attention has been paid to the applications of molten salts to the metallurgical processes. However, precise data are not available for the physicochemical properties of molten salts which are necessary for theoretical and practical estimations of these processes except the monovalent binary systems owing to the experimental difficulties caused by their high melting points, high vapour pressures and reactivities. Development of a new technique valid at high temperatures will make it possible to extend the experiment to more complicated systems such as the ones included in metallurgical processes. In order to know the liquid structure and the relative importance of the physicochemical factors related to the structure in the light of theoretical means, a more extensive and precise knowledge of the properties of molten salts is required. To meet this demand, a systematic study of the physicochemical properties of more complex molten salt mixtures such as the PbCl2 ZnCl2 binary system has been undertaken. In this study, first of all, the phase diagram and the density of the PbCl2-ZnCl2 binary system have been determined. The phase diagram of the PbCl2-ZnCl2 binary system was determined by Herrmann(1) and by Ugai and Shatillo(2). However, their results did not agree well in regard to the presence of eutectic point and the shape of liquidus. Determination of the liquidus has therefore been made again by paying attention to the preparation of the chemical reagents and the conditions of thermal analysis.
