The use of a catalyst in the manufacture of lubricants come through many developments, from a homogeneous base catalysts, homogeneous acid catalyst to hetero- geneous solid catalyst system (heterogenous catalyst). One example of heterogeneous catalyst base material is silica. The purpose of this research was to study the grafting method of sulfonic group on silica from waterglass with PEG (polyethylene glycol) template as solid acid catalyst and to analyze the effect of PEG concentration on ionic capacity. Silica sol was produced by addition of PEG and HCl into waterglass. The PEG template was separated by two different methods; solvothermal extraction and calcinations process. The following step was grafting process of the sulfonate into the silica powder, and drying the silica sulfonate in certain temperature. The dried sulfonated silica particles were characterized for their pore size by BET method, the functional group by FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) test, and the ionic capacity by titrimetry analysis. The result showed that the separated PEG template process with calcinations method gave a better result than the solvothermal extraction method based on the amount of PEG that disappear. While from BET result showed that the calcinations process produced smaller surface area pore than the extraction solvothermal process. The effect of the concentration of PEG template, showed that the surface area mostly decreased with the addition of the PEG template concentration and increased again at 0.0178 g/mL. The biggest ionic capacity at 12,603 mmol eq/g silica was obtained from solvothermal method. Abstrak Penggunaan katalis dalam pembuatan pelumas me- ngalami banyak perkembangan, dari katalis homogen basa, katalis homogen asam hingga dikembangkan penggunaan katalis padat sistem heterogen (heterogenous catalyst). Salah satu contoh bahan dasar dari katalis heterogen ini adalah silika. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari teknik pencangkokan gugus sulfonat pada  silika dari waterglass dengan templat PEG (polyethylene glycol) sebagai katalis asam padat dan menganalisa pengaruh konsentrasi templat terhadap kapasitas ion. Sol silika dibuat dengan menambahkan PEG dan HCl ke dalam waterglass. Templat PEG dihilangkan dengan dua cara yang berbeda yaitu ekstraksi solvothermal dan kalsinasi. Proses selanjutnya adalah pencangkokan sulfonat pada serbuk silica dan silika tersulfonasi pada suhu tertentu. Partikel silika tersulfonasi yang telah kering dikarakterisasi ukuran porinya dengan metode BET, gugus fungsi dengan uji FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red), dan kapasitas ionik dengan analisis titrimetri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode kalsinasi ternyata dapat menghilangkan senyawa PEG lebih baik di- bandingkan dengan metode ekstraksi solvothermal, tetapi berdasarkan hasil BET, penghilangan templat melalui proses kalsinasi menghasilkan luas permukaan yang lebih kecil jika dibandingkan dengan kondisi sebelum templat dihilangkan, sedangkan ekstraksi solvothermal meng- hasilkan luas permukaan silika yang lebih besar. Untuk pengaruh konsentrasi templat PEG, didapatkan hasil bahwa luas permukaan partikel silika cenderung turun dengan penambahan templat dan naik kembali pada konsentrasi 0,0178 g/mL. Kapasitas ionik terbesar di- dapat pada silika dengan metode solvothermal yaitu sebesar 12,603 mmol/g silika.
