In this article I examine discourses of national progress and technological change surrounding digital and high definition (HD) television. Via an examination of various texts—television and web content as well as advertising on and offline—I argue that these contemporary narratives echo older discourses from the early years of television and the Internet. Similarly, I suggest that while it’s necessary for television and communications theories to address new questions of spatiality, and of global movements of information and technologies, classical theories of television are still highly pertinent. As such, I identify a multidirectional flow between technologies of digital television, cellphone, and the body which both supports and subverts a global meaning economy of consumption and intertextuality amid rapidly converging technologies. Resume : Dans cet article, j’examine les discours sur le progres national et le changement technologique entourant la television digitale et celle a haute definition. Par l’examen de divers textes—y compris le contenu de la television et du Web ainsi que la publicite tant en ligne que non—je soutiens que ces narrations contemporaines font echo a des discours plus anciens provenant des debuts de la television et d’Internet. A cet egard, je propose que, bien que les theories sur la television et la communication doivent necessairement porter sur de nouvelles questions de spatialite et de mouvements mondiaux d’information et de technologies, les theories classiques de la television demeurent tres pertinentes. Ainsi, j’identifie, entre les technologies que sont la television digitale, le telephone cellulaire et le corps, un flux multidirectionnel qui tour a tour appuie et conteste une economie mondiale du sens, de la consommation et de l’intertextualite parmi des technologies en convergence rapide.
