The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has been subject to a number of government commissioned reviews in its 68-year history, the most recent being that conducted by Bob Mansfield whose report was released in January 1997. The Mansfield Report, The Challenge of a Better ABC, comprises a brief 53 pages but contains a number of far-reaching recommendations for the role and functions of the Australian national broadcaster. This paper provides an examination of the Mansfield Review as a case study of a contemporary independent inquiry into a public service broadcaster. It analyses the content and recommendations of Mansfield's report, evaluates the extent to which the recommendations have been implemented, and assesses the current operations of the ABC to determine the impact of the Mansfield Review on the Corporation.Resume: L'Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) a ete le sujet de bon nombre de rapports gouvernementaux au cours de ses soixante-huit annees d'existence. Le plus recent, paru en janvier 1997, fut celui dirige par Bob Mansfield. Le Rapport Mansfield, « The Challenge of a Better ABC » (« Le Defi d'un meilleur ABC »), ne compte que 53 pages mais contient plusieurs recommandations de grande envergure sur le role et les fonctions du radiodiffuseur national australien. Cet article-ci consiste en une etude de cas du Rapport Mansfield a titre d'exemple d'une enquete independante contemporaine sur une chaine du service public. L'article analyse le contenu et les recommandations du Rapport Mansfield, evalue dans quelle mesure ses recommandations ont ete mises en place et observe les activites actuelles de l'ABC afin de determiner l'impact du rapport Mansfield sur cette societe publique.
