Resumo Abstract: Phytoremediation is defined as a set of technologies that employ plants and their associated microorganisms to reduce the concentrations or toxic effects of contaminants present in the environment. The phytoremediation of organic pollutants in large scale requires a transversal approach of the knowledge about the plant/pollutant/soil interaction comprising the routes of metabolization, phytotoxicity of the pollutant on the phytoremediation species and the search for greater efficiency of the process. Research on TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) is an example of the evolution in phytoremediation of organic contaminants. The limitations to the application and commercialization of phytoremediation are being overcome through the evolution of research and knowledge integration in different areas.
