Since the invention of the automobile, a great debate has arisen around the technology of its engines and the fuels to be employed. Recently, the hardening of environmental legislation and the prospect of high oil prices coupled with the development of electronics and computer systems have led leading manufacturers to focus on hybrid and electric motor vehicles in a gradual replacement for combustion vehicles motors. This paper discusses the perspectives of Brazilian fuel ethanol in this scenario, through a cyclical analysis of data on supply, consumption and policies to encourage the use of alternative fuels to petroleum products. The study reveals that although a large number of countries and companies are already investing in the feasibility of electric propulsion vehicles, in Brazil there is a context marked by sectoral political agreements, availability of hydrated and anhydrous ethanol, state control of gasoline composition and production, and the technology of flex fuel engines, that tends to maintain the relevant role of Brazilian biofuel in the national market, with a perspective of increasing consumption.
