This essay, based on bibliographic and documentary research, discusses the relationship between higher education and the process of students’ psychological distress in the context of the structural crisis of capital, particularized in the Brazilian reality. It reflects on the implications of the process of capital globalization, productive restructuring and neoliberal adjustment of the state to the production of social insecurity, fear an melancholy, determinants for the mental suffering of young students, now compounded by the national dismantling of social and social policies and attack on rights. Resisting this time for hopelessness through reflection and deepening the theme is urgent to overcome these morbid symptoms.
