Purpose: While the importance of early childhood character education is emphasized, studies from various perspectives on the values ​related to character education represented in picture books are meaningful. The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of respect for others in the picture book of Tommy Ungerer, an author who reveals diversity and difference, consideration and understanding of minority while humorizing social prejudice and absurdity. Method: Eleven picture books were selected and interpreted using pattern analysis. First, the part that showed respect of the other in the interaction between text and picture was marked, then the pattern was revealed, and then the relationship between the patterns was analyzed. Results: It was shown that the respect for others represented in Tommy Ungerer’s picture books should be practiced regardless of the negative characteristics of others, the difference from others, and the interests of the self. Respect for others has also been found to transform social relationships among members. Conclusion: Tommy Ungerer's picture books showed that respect for other is possible when we create new meanings through actively deciphering signs of others and continuously experiencing –becoming process from various connections and assemblage. In this sense, Tommy Ungerer’s picture books have educational value as texts that give young children unique meanings, rather than making fossilized habits according to identity philosophy.
