The present article aims to offer a New Historicist reading of George Eliot's 1861 novel, Silas Marner based on Foucault's theories. This article presents two central questions: Are Foucauldian concepts of power and discourse traceable in George Eliot’s Silas Marner and how characters' actions in Silas Marner demonstrate George Eliot's view on Victorian era's dominant view including money. To answer these questions, the researchers do a careful observation of Silas Marner considering Foucault's discourse of power. In other words, the manifestation of the concepts is explored in Silas Marner through tracing them in the actions and behaviors of the major characters (Silas Marner, Godfrey and Dunstan Cass). The present article reveals monetary system, social class, and capitalist society of Victorian time through the events of the mentioned novel. Also the article shows that Silas's power in discourse of money and the Cass brothers' resistance toward him.
