This essay explores the origins of "modernizing Maya” as a cultural characterization. Reviewing Redfield and Villa Roja's studies at Chan Kom and Steggerda's at Piste, the author demonstrates "how and why it is possible that Maya culture has been textually constructed in anthropological imagination and popular views as a folk progressive cultural community, and that this representation has been located in a determined space (Chan Kom) and no other (Piste). The answer in found in the history of American Anthropological studies, in the intersection between scientific inquery policies and national and international constructs of community identity. Concluding remarks discuss research deficiencies and suggestions for correcting them.
