The only verse that reveals information about Hârut and Mârut in the Qur’an only mentions how they slandered Solomon and that they were magic instructors. It does not give any detailed or explicit information about them being angels. Besides the idea of Hârut and Mârut being angels and their reputation in some of the sources as magic instructing angels or sinful angels, clearly contradicts with a verse in the Qur’an saying that angels are innocent and sin free beings. As a result to this situation the ideas about the identity of Hârut and Mârut had varied in different studies. In this study they are examined within the context of the narratives that are in the original sources of Islam and verses from Qur’an and the question of what is the nature of Hârut and Mârut is tried to be answered.
