Magnetism is an ancient phenomenon, known to the Greeks, who hailed from Magnesia. Aristotle attributed the first scientific discussion on magnetism to the Greek Philosopher Thales, who lived in 600 BC. Around the same time the Indian Ayurvedic Sushruta performed surgery with the aid of magnetic implements. The ancient Chinese too knew about magnetism in 200 BC in the form of minerals called lodestones (now known as magnetite with the chemical formula Fe3O4) that attracted iron. By 1100 AD, the Chinese employed lodestones as compass needle for the purpose of navigation. Today, we know that lodestones have a property called ferromagnetism.
