Com o objetivo de estudar o efeito de diferentes doses de metribuzin na taxa fotossintética líquida e na tolerância de plantas de soja (Glycine max (L.) Merill, 'Uberaba' e 'Alvorada '), foi conduzido um experimento, em casa de vegetação, no Centro de Pesquisa do Cacau (CEPEC), Ilhéus, BA. Não se constataram diferenças significativas para o efeito das varie dades e para a inter ação variedades x doses, para todos os da dos analisados. Os valores médios da taxa fotossintética líquida foram 22,92; 19,87 e 18,20 mg CO2.dm-2.h-1, para as variedades 'Uberaba ' e 'Alvorada ' submetida s as doses de 0,0; 0,4 e 0,8 kg i.a. ha-1 de metri buzin, respectivamente. O efeito do metri buzin sobre a taxa fotossintética liquida foi evidenciado somente nas plant as submetidas a dose de 0,8 kg i.a. ha-1. O herbi cida não influenciou a abertura estomátic a nem a taxa transpiratória. Com o aumento das doses de metribuzin, ocorreu redução no peso médio da matéria seca da parte aérea, da raiz e da área foliar media das plantas de soja. Destes da dos analisados, verificou-se que o herbicida em menor dose causou mais redução no peso da matéria seca da raiz do que da parte aérea. Doses subletais do metribuzin causaram efeito estimulante na matéria seca relativa da parte aérea, da raiz e da área foliar, nas plantas da variedade 'Uberaba'. Na determinação da inibição de 50 (I50) dos valores acima, verificou se que o metribuzin exerceu maior efeito fitotóxico nas raízes das plantas da variedade 'Alvorada', mostrando ter esta variedade menor capacidade para metabolizar o metribuzin em compostos não-fitotóxicos do que a 'Uberaba'. The effects of different doses of metribuzin on net photosynthetic rates and tolerance of soybean (Glycine max (L. ) Merrill, 'Alvorada' e Uberaba') pla nta was studiet in glasshouse conditions at Centro de Pesquisa do Cacau (CE-PEC), Ilhéus, BA. No significant differences were observed either among the varieties or the interation varieties x doses for all parameters analysed. The aver age of the net phot osyn thetic rates for both va rietie s were 22,9 2, 19,87 and 18,20 mg CO2.dm- 2.h-1 tre ated with 0,0, 0,4 and 0,8 kg a.i. ha-1 of metribuzin, respectively. The negative effect of metribuzin on net photosynthetic rate was evident only in the soybean treated with 0,8 kg a.i./ha-l. The herbicide did not affect the stomatal resistance and transpiration rate. As the dose s of metribuzin increased the dry weight of plants parts and leaf area decreased. The effect was more prominent on root dry weight than shoot biomass. Subletals doses of metribuzin enhanced the shoot and root relative dry weights and leaf area in soybean Uberaba. By stimating the dose which inhibit growth in 50% (I50), it was shown that metribu zin had an accentuated phytotoxics effect on roots of Alvorada soybean, suggesting that this variety has a lower capacity of metabolizing metribuzin in non-phyto toxic compounds than the Uberaba
