Individual and group of seeds of some sunflower populations were utilized in order to evaluate the feasibility of oil content evaluations by the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance method (NMR). Correlation analysis with the extractive method (Soxhlet) was performed. The results showed that: 1) the oil in the seeds behaved like a liquid in the NMR analysis; 2) there was a high and positive correlation (r = 0.93) between NMR and Soxhlet and data obtained by NMR were statistically higher than those obtained by Soxhlet; 3) there was no correlation between seed weight and oil content; 4) the observed variability in oil content among seeds of a plant were higher than between plants of a population; these values indicate the importance of making individual analysis of oil content by the NMR method for the sunflower breeding for oil content.Progênies e sementes individuais de algumas populações de girassol foram utilizadas em um estudo da adequação da técnica da ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) para determinação do teor de óleo das sementes. Foram feitas análises de correlação entre essa técnica e o método de extração por Soxhlet. Os resultados indicaram que o óleo contido nas sementes de girassol comporta-se como líquido na análise pela RMN; o fator geométrico não influiu nas medições pela RMN; houve alta correlação entre os teores de óleo obtidos por Soxhlet e pelo método da RMN; os valores obtidos com o uso da RMN foram estatisticamente superiores aos obtidos por Soxhlet; não houve correlação significativa entre massa da semente e teor de óleo; houve uma variação de teor de óleo maior entre as sementes de um mesmo capítulo que entre capítulos de uma população. A amplitude de variação do teor de óleo entre as sementes de um mesmo capítulo indica a importância. de se proceder à análise individual do teor de óleo das sementes, pela técnica da RMN, para o melhoramento visando aumento no conteúdo de óleo
