About 3.3 million deaths resulted from ischemic stroke [1]. A study embedded in the population-based Rotterdam Study that has comprised 2521 persons (mean age 69.7 ± 6.8 years) that underwent an MDCT scan has used multivariable logistic regression to investigate the associations of calcification in the internal carotid artery (ICA) with presence of stroke. It was found a strong and graded association of prevalent stroke with ICA calcification, independent of cardiovascular risk factors [2].
