Economy and science evolves through the emergence and diffusion of new technologies, in which process the acceptance of new technologies by society is an outstanding moment. In this article, we discuss the adoption of a new technology, fifth generation wireless technology, which defines the telecommunications sector today and is still in the immature phase of the technological life cycle in Central and Eastern Europe. AZ 5G TÁRSADALMI MEGÍTÉLÉSE: HOGYAN TERJED A NEGATÍV ÉRZELEM? 677 Magyar Tudomány 182(2021)5 Az online survey was conducted to examine the social perception of 5G with 504 valid responses. Regarding the sample selection, we tried to over-represent areas where 5G mobile data service was already available to get to know those opinion, who had the opportunity to try 5G, in order to receive relevant answers about people’s experiences with 5G. Based on our results, the social perception of 5G is divided, although the majority of the respondents form a positive attitude towards the technology, significant negative emotions can be identified as well. Social acceptance of 5G is still in progress, the absolute necessity of 5G is felt only by a fraction of the population. We found correlation between the sources of information and people’s emotions, information that evokes negative emotions about 5G appears on forums, blogs, and spreads significantly through personal conversations, closed Facebook groups, and Facebook posts of individuals. Education with positive experiences from personal trial can help to steer emotions about 5G in a positive direction. Besides the shift in emotions, developing consumer use cases which go beyond online surfing, providing additional value to customers may be the key to provoke the felt need of 5G.
