Recently, distribution networks based smart grid have gained much attention due to the availability of installing hybrid power generators in addition to the merits of installing FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) equipments in order to control its node voltages and the power flow. This paper presents a new technique for achieving line loss minimization in radial distribution system using multiple Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Static Capacitors (SCs). The proposed technique depends on injecting controlled reactive currents at certain nodes in the system in order to minimize the total line loss. The injected reactive currents compensate the reactive currents required by the inductive loads supplied from the system and hence reduce the feeders currents and the total line loss in the distribution system. The optimal number of the installed static capacitor should be considered in order to further reduce the total line loss. Therefore, the relation between the input number of static capacitors and the reactive current line loss in conjunction with the reactive current control by STATCOMs is derived. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme has been verified experimentally using a laboratory prototype system.
