CaCuGe 2 O 6  has an extremely distorted pyroxene structure with  P2  1 / c ,  a  = 10.198 Å, b  = 9.209 Å,  c  = 5.213 Å,  β  = 105.73° and  Z  = 4. The final  R -value is  R w   = 0.028. The coordination polyhedron of copper is a deformed Jahn-Teller octahedron; Ca has an irregular 7 + 1 coordination. Half of the Ge atoms occupy tetrahedra forming Ge 2 O 6  chains which are arranged in layers as typical for pyroxenes. The other half is located in trigonal bipyramids GeO 5  which are linked to layers Ge 4 O 12 . Both layer types alternate along [unk].
