C34H38O2Sn, monoclinic, P12/c1 (no. 13), a = 15.610(4) Å, b = 11.750(4) Å, c = 16.169(4) Å, = 90.40(2)°, V = 2965.6 Å, Z = 4, Rgt(F) = 0.059, wRref(F) = 0.213, T = 293 K. Source of material The compound was prepared from the reaction between trimesityltin bromide (1 g, 0.18 mmol) and NaO2CC6H5 (0.26 g, 0.18 mmol) in methanol (25 mL). The mixture was refluxed for 6 h. The product precipitated upon cooling, along with NaCl, and was then purified by evaporating the solvent under vacuum, followed by recrystallization from acetone/ethanol (v/v 1:1) to give colorless crystals (yield 0.81 g (80 %), m.p. 478-480 K). Discussion The Sn atom exists in a distorted tetrahedral environment defined by a C3O donor set as the carboxylate ligand coordinates in the monodentate mode: d(Sn—O1) = 2.060(7) Å and d(Sn···O2) = 2.975(9) Å. The range of angles subtended at Sn is 97.8(3)° to 120.7(4)°, with the widest angle ascribed to the close approach of the O2 atom. The observed structure is in essential agreement with the acetate analog [1]. The structural chemistry of the triorganotin carboxylates has been reviewed and is known to have a wide variety of structures, including monomeric, to oligomeric and polymeric motifs [2]. Steric effects, associated with Snand/or ligand-based substituents have been found responsible for dictating the nature of the structure in the solid state [3]. The present structure, with large Sn-bound mesityl groups is monomeric in accord with these conclusions. Z. Kristallogr.
