Pseudomonas fluorescens Y 4  grown in an iron deficient medium produces increased amounts of 2,9-di- and 2,3,9-trihydroxyphenazine-1-carboxylic acid when Be 2+  is added to the culture. The significance of the formation of these compounds is discussed.
