From fruiting bodies of Gomphidius 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexahydroxybiphenyl (7) and a red pigment, gomphilactone (1), have been isolated. The latter may be derived biogenetically from 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene (6) via oxidative dimerization to 3,5′-dihydroxydibenzoquinone (8) followed by Postemak rearrangement.
