Tetramesityldibismuthane is obtained by the reaction of Mes 2 BiCl (Mes = 2,4,6-(CH 3 ) 3 C 6 H 2 ) and LiEH 4  (E = B, Al) with intermediate formation of Mes 2 BiH. Crystals of Mes 4 Bi 2  consist of centrosymmetric tetramesityldibismuthane molecules in the trans conformation. The value of the Bi-Bi bond length is 3.087(3) Å .
