Improved syntheses of ruthenocene (Ruc) and osmocene (Osc) are described. These lithiated metallocenes (RucLi 1-3  and OscLi 1-3 ) react with cobaltocenium-hexafluorophosphate (Coc + PF 6  - ) to give the corresponding oligometallocenes Coc + —RucPF 6  -  (1), 1,1′-(Coc + ) 2 -Ruc(PF 6 ) 2  (2), Coc + —OscPF 6  -  (4), and 1,1′-(Coc+) 2 —Osc(PF 6 ) 2  (5). The products were characterized by IR, MS, NMR and elemental analysis.
