In order to obtain soluble complexes containing sterically protected metal centers the new bi- and tetradentate thiolate amine ligands 2-mercapto-3,5-di- t butylaniline (=  t bu 2 -ma-H) and 1,2-bis(2-mercapto-3,5-di- t butylanilino)ethane (=  t bu 4 -mae-H 2 ) were synthesized.  t bu 2 -ma-H reacts with FeCl 2 -4 H 2 O and CO to give [Fe(CO) 2 ( t bu 2 -ma) 2 ], with Zn(ac) 2  -2 H 2 O [Zn( t bu 2 -ma) 2 ] is obtained whose acid hydrolysis and reaction with H 2 S, respectively, yield pure  t bu 2 -Ina-H. The condensation of  t bu 2 -ma-H with glyoxal yields the respective bis-benzthiazolidine, which is re­duced by LiAlH 4  in the presence of Na[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ] to  t bu 4 -bmae-H 2 .  t bu 4 -bmae-Li 2 . reacts with [Ru(CO) 3 (THF)Cl 2 ], [Ru(PMe 3 ) 4 Cl 2 ] and [Ru(PPh 3 ) 2 (CH 3 CN) 2 Cl 2 ], respectively, to yield [Ru(L) 2 (Tm 4 -bmae)j (L = CO, PMe 3 , PPh 3 ). The complexes are more soluble in organic solvents than the corresponding unsubstituted bmae complexes, bmae 2-  = 1,2-bis(2-mercaptoanilino)- ethane(2-).
