The cobalt(II) 2,2′-bipyridine complexes Co(2.2′bpy) 2 X 2  (X = Cl, Br, I) have been synthesized from the anhydrous halides and a stoichiometric amount of 2,2′-bipyridinc in acetonitrile. From the IR spectra a trans configuration is assumed for the chloro complex. For the bromo and iodo compound an ionic form [Co(2,2′bpy) 2 X]X with a square pyramidal coordination of the Co atom is more likely. cis-[Co(2,2′bpy) 2 Cl 2 ] · 1,5C 2 H 4 C1 2  was obtained from Co(2.2'bpy) 2 I 2  in 1,2-dichloroethane. It crystallizes with Z = 4 in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /n: a = 1379.4. b = 1325.9. c = 1423.9 pm. β = 97.11°. Very long Co−Cl bond distances of 239.2 and 245.0 pm are observed, while the Co−N distances (213.8 to 217.4 pm) are of normal length. Reaction of Co(2,2′bpy) 2 I 2  with 4,4′-bipyridine yields [Co(2,2′bpy) 2 (4.4′bpy)] 2+  which is easily oxidized to give a polymeric complex that exhibits a conductivity of 10 -6  S/cm.
