As shown by X-ray analysis the structure of the red modification of tetrakis(diphenyl-seleno)-dimercury(I)-bis(chlorate(VII)) contains cations [(C 6 H 5 ) 2 Se] 2 Hg-Hg[Se(C 6 H 5 ) 2 ] 2  ⊕⊕  and ClO 4  - -anions. The twofold coordination of each mercury atom by 2 selenium atoms is remarkable for a mercury(I) compound. The relations between red and yellow modifications are discussed.
